Diagnosis and treatment of BRONJ (Bisphosphonate-related Osteonecrosis of Jaw)
Kim Jong-Hee

Abstract
Bisphosphonates (BPs) have been commonly used in the treatment of metabolic and oncologic bone disorders. BRONJ
(Bisphosphonate Related Osteonecrosis of Jaws) is a complication of BPs therapy, firstly reported in 2003. This paper
presents a concise review of the literature about diagnosis and treatment of BRONJ. A clear etiology and treatment of BRONJ remains unknown and the pathogenesis seems uncertain because BRONJ occurs from several local or general factors. Therefore, medical history taking and intra-oral examination have to be performed before dental procedure in the BPs-taking patients. The treatment goals of BRONJ are pain relief and infection control to prevent the progression of disease. Invasive surgical treatment of BRONJ from long-term or intra-venous uptake of BPs should be avoided as much as possible. Even though the implant restoration was done, periodic check-up is needed to prevent late failure.
